What is Versant by Pearson?

Versant is a language test owned by Pearson, and one of the most recognised names in language assessment for hiring. It started as an English proficiency test and evolved into a broader pre-employment assessment platform used by large enterprises.

Versant is especially strong in the BPO sector, with an established presence in Europe and fast expansion in Southeast Asia. Speaking and writing are scored automatically, and results are reported on Pearson's Global Scale of English (GSE), which is mapped to the CEFR.

Its strengths are clear: an institutional brand, a stable and well-documented score scale, and a long track record in volume hiring. For many call centres, a Versant score is the benchmark that every other test gets compared to.

Why do companies look for Versant alternatives?

Versant is reliable, but every candidate takes the same standardised test. Hiring teams now want questions built around the actual job, such as a BPO call or a customer complaint, scored by AI that still returns a CEFR-compliant level. For a deeper look at this shift, see our guide on standardised or modular English language assessment.

How we evaluated these Versant alternatives

The alternatives below are either institutional English tests with deep validation, or pre-employment platforms that operate in the same sectors as Versant. We compared them on five factors:

  1. Language proficiency assessment for hiring. Is assessing language for recruitment the tool's main job, or one feature among many?
  2. Languages beyond English. Can you use the same tool for multilingual hiring?
  3. Privacy and compliance. Does the vendor document GDPR and EU AI Act compliance for recruitment use?
  4. Reliability and validation. Is there public evidence that the CEFR levels are accurate?
  5. Customisation for BPO and customer service. Can questions be adapted to specific job profiles?

Pricing model and test format are reported for information but not scored. The review is based on public product documentation at the time of writing.

1. Talketet, best for multilingual volume hiring

Talketet is a specialised language proficiency assessment built for recruitment. It tests all four skills (speaking, writing, listening and reading) and returns a CEFR level for each, in English, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and more.

Tests can be customised for specific jobs and contexts, including BPO agents and customer service roles, and the AI keeps scoring custom questions against the CEFR.

Its CEFR alignment was developed with linguistics researchers at European universities, and the validation was published after peer review.

Key features worth noting:

  • Questions built around the job, such as a BPO call or a customer complaint
  • CEFR level for each of the four skills, with results available instantly
  • Exportable certificate to share with candidates and managers
  • Candidate dashboard to sort scores and proctoring results in volume hiring

ProsCons
  • Specialised in language proficiency for hiring
  • Customisable for specific jobs and contexts, including BPO and customer service
  • Multilingual test of all four skills on one scoring model
  • Public validation, peer-reviewed with European universities in linguistics
  • Dedicated DPO, data hosted in the EU, GDPR-compliant proctoring and AI Act documentation
  • Not ideal for small volumes and individual tests

2. International English Test, best for quick online English certification

International English Test is a UK-based online English test that gives candidates a quick, verifiable CEFR certificate. It offers a wide range of English tests at different prices and formats, for both job seekers and companies, with self-serve credits and no contract. It is an ALTE Associate Member, a membership that accounts for the quality of test providers in the language assessment field. Its offer for individuals makes it a great tool for CV enrichment.

Key features worth noting:

  • Quick sign-up, with no account registration needed to take a test
  • Different types of English tests, from quick level checks to full four-skill certificates
ProsCons
  • Wide range of English tests at different prices, for job seekers and companies
  • Transparent self-serve pricing, from £10.99 per test
  • ALTE Associate Member, a useful signal of reliability
  • English only
  • Not ideal for volume recruiting

While International English Test offers a valid and reliable English assessment, its format makes it more of an institutional certificate for individual job seekers than a tool for multilingual recruiters doing volume hiring, which is where Versant is used.

3. Linguaskill by Cambridge, best for certified English testing of employees

Linguaskill website

Source: Cambridge English, Linguaskill website

Linguaskill is Cambridge's online, adaptive English test. It covers all four skills and reports a CEFR level together with a Cambridge English Scale score, with General and Business versions.

The Business version is particularly interesting as a Versant alternative, as it is the natural evolution of BULATS, with questions in corporate scenarios, global commerce, marketing and executive management.

Key features worth noting:

  • Adaptive reading and listening questions, so candidates get scores that adapt to their actual level
  • Secure proctoring to prevent cheating
  • Recognised by some universities and institutions
ProsCons
  • Certified by Cambridge, with strong institutional recognition
  • Deep public validation behind the test structure
  • English only
  • Very expensive per candidate

While it's a very well validated English test by one of the most famous language institutions in the world, it is not ideal for recruiting and employee assessment. The full test takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, which candidates in online tests will find challenging. Furthermore, writing and speaking results can take up to 48 hours, which makes it hard to use for recruiting purposes.

4. SmallTalk2Me, best for combining English training and testing

SmallTalk2Me is an AI-powered English speaking assessment and practice platform designed for non-native speakers. It is a good fit when testing and English training go together, for example when a company assesses a level before and after a course.

Key features worth noting:

  • 15-minute duration, which makes it ideal for candidates
  • English training plan integrated in the app
  • Free trial and pay-as-you-go available
ProsCons
  • Questions can be customised
  • Quick 15-minute oral assessment
  • English only
  • No full four-skill CEFR report, because listening and reading are missing

While the 15-minute test is ideal for an online setting, you can only reliably verify a few skills, like speaking and writing. If you want a full professional certificate that includes all the skills, listening and reading included, to give to your candidates, managers and even clients, this is not the right tool.

5. Xobin, best for language testing inside an existing Xobin setup

Xobin is a pre-employment assessment and recruitment platform that helps organisations screen, track, and interview candidates. It positions itself as an all-in-one talent platform, where an English test sits alongside coding, sales, logic and psychometric tests.

Key features worth noting:

  • Big list of tests other than languages
  • CEFR descriptors mapping by skill
  • Configurable test types
ProsCons
  • Convenient if you already buy other assessment types from Xobin
  • Tests in 7 languages
  • Too long, 30 to 50 minutes
  • Not all languages include a speaking assessment

While Xobin offers a wide variety of test types, language assessment is just a small part of it, inside its communication category. Also, the speaking part does not seem to be present in all the available languages. CEFR validation and reliability data are not publicly available, although the company says it validates each assessment type and could show this to clients. If you already have a Xobin plan, however, this solution could be a good choice if you don't need to evaluate multilingual speaking skills.

6. Equip, best for simple English testing

Equip is a hiring assessment platform with an English proficiency test scored by AI across all sections, plus AI proctoring and a built-in applicant tracking system.

Key features worth noting:

  • Quick demo available without sign-up
  • Quick version of the test available in 15 minutes
ProsCons
  • Transparent and simple pricing, starting at $1 per candidate
  • Focused on English only
  • No public CEFR validation reports

While Equip has a very interesting offer for English testing at an affordable price, its quick core product could raise concerns about its brevity: testing 4 skills in 15 minutes is pretty short, and it's hard to reach the minimum number of questions needed to make sure the candidate's level is actually met. As with Xobin, if you're already using the software for other test types and want to try an English assessment, it could be worth it.

7. TestGorilla, best for grammar screening inside a wider test battery

TestGorilla is a pre-employment testing platform with a large library of skills and personality tests. Its language tests cover many languages, each set at a specific CEFR level. TestGorilla is widely recognised as a pre-employment assessment tool offering a wide variety of test types for HR, from cognitive to personality. It's famous for its nice design, ATS integrations and recruiting features such as the sourcing platform, which make it ideal for a wide range of recruiters and talent acquisition professionals with very different needs.

Key features worth noting:

  • Large variety of test types, from cognitive to programming and language
  • Additional recruiting features, such as the sourcing module
  • Large pool of ATS integrations available
ProsCons
  • Grammar and reading tests in many languages
  • A much bigger library of tests and services beyond language
  • Validation published on a public page for each language assessment
  • No speaking or writing, only multiple-choice questions

While TestGorilla is for sure a great tool for recruiters, with a very large library of tests, ATS integrations and additional features with a great UI design, it lacks verticality in language proficiency, given that its language tests are mostly grammar and multiple choice and lack a true speaking assessment module.

Assess multilingual candidates with Talketet

Talketet assesses candidates in six languages on one CEFR-aligned scoring model, so a B2 in French means the same as a B2 in German. Recruiters see a level for each skill, which shows where a candidate is strong and where they need support.

Tests are built around the job: a BPO agent handles a realistic call, a customer service candidate replies to a real complaint. Results arrive instantly, so the test fits early in a high-volume funnel.

For enterprise procurement, Talketet provides GDPR-compliant proctoring, data hosted in the EU and AI Act documentation. See how a multinational HR group assessed 200 candidates in 2 hours, speaking included.
